Multidisciplinary Artist
My work is a sustained exploration of the world around me, from the vast, sun-drenched landscapes of my native California to the quiet intimacy of everyday objects. For over three decades, I have been engaged in a deep dialogue with the legacies of modern art, guided by the twin philosophies of Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism. My practice is not one of literal representation, but of transformation. A search for the sublime in the familiar.I embrace a process rooted in the Surrealist practice of automatism and the Abstract Expressionist belief that the canvas is an arena for action. Rather than depicting the natural world, I deconstruct it, seeking to resolve what Surrealism’s founder called the “contradictory conditions of dream and reality.” This begins with an intuitive, iterative process that allows the unconscious to guide the initial composition. From there, the work becomes an event. Each layer of texture and field of color is a direct, spontaneous gesture, a record of the physical act of creation. The painting evolves through this constant evaluation, a dance between accident and intention. My goal is to create a work that is not merely a picture, but a revelation of its own making. The process is complete when the piece resolves itself, when the initial observation has been fully transformed into an autonomous visual statement. Through this journey, I aim to create work that is not just seen, but felt. A direct and unmediated experience of form, color, and the raw energy of the creative act itself.

Jason Richardson is a California-based multidisciplinary artist with over thirty years of practice rooted in abstract expressionism and surrealism. He holds a BA in International Relations from UC Davis and an MFA from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, where he refined the layered painting approaches that define his work today. Richardson's paintings have been widely collected by individuals and businesses throughout the Sacramento region and exhibited in both solo and group shows.Beyond the canvas, he actively engages with artificial intelligence as a creative and philosophical pursuit: exploring the boundaries of human-machine collaboration, particularly through writing. He was also the CEO of a nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to art education for children, and he would teach workshops and classes in his community.
