Jason Richardson

Multidisciplinary Artist

About

Jason Richardson is a California-based multidisciplinary artist with over 30 years of experience. His work is rooted in modern art theory, drawing heavily from abstract expressionism and surrealism, and is informed by close observation of everyday objects, landscapes, and lived experience—particularly across California.Richardson’s practice is defined by exploration of medium, composition, and process. His paintings often feature bold color fields, layered textures, and a strong sense of movement. Rather than depicting the natural world literally, he deconstructs it—reducing landscapes and environments into base forms, rhythms, and color relationships. After earning a BA in International Relations from UC Davis, Richardson continued to develop his artistic practice alongside work in other industries before completing his MFA at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. During graduate study, he refined multiple painting approaches that continue to shape his work today. His creative process is intuitive and iterative. While pieces may begin with a loose plan, they evolve through constant evaluation—allowing color, texture, and form to guide each decision until the work resolves.Richardson’s work has been widely collected by individuals and businesses throughout the Sacramento region and has been shown in both solo and group exhibitions. He is also deeply committed to arts education, having taught workshops and classes locally, and currently serves as the CEO of a nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to art education for children.
